A deadbolt secures a door by extending a solid bolt from the lock case into a strike fixed to the frame. Unlike a spring latch, the bolt cannot normally be pushed back by pressure against its angled surface. This construction makes commercial deadbolt locks suitable for entrances, storerooms, service areas and other openings requiring controlled security.

Backset is the horizontal distance from the edge of a door to the centerline of the lock’s operating point. Depending on the product, that point may be the center of a lever spindle, keyhole or cylinder.
