What Hardware Does a Fire Door Need?

Fire doors depend on more than a rated door leaf. Their ability to resist fire and smoke also relies on compatible hinges, locks, latches, closers, seals and frame components. Every item of fire door hardware must support reliable closing and positive latching while preserving the tested construction of the complete opening.

The Essential Hardware Set

The exact configuration changes according to door material, location, traffic level and local code, but most fire-rated openings require the following elements.

Hinges or pivots

Hinges carry the door’s weight and keep it correctly aligned with the frame. Their size, number, material and bearing structure must suit the door dimensions, mass and usage frequency. Worn or undersized hinges may cause the leaf to drop, producing uneven clearances and unreliable latching.

Fire-rated lock or latch

A fire door normally needs a positive latching device that holds the leaf closed during fire exposure. The lock must be compatible with the door preparation and supported by the relevant fire-test evidence. Mortise Locks are frequently specified because they combine dependable latching with multiple security functions.

Controlled door closer

The closer returns the door to its frame after each use. Closing force must overcome the latch and any resistance from seals or air pressure without creating excessive opening force. Delayed closing or hold-open functions require careful code review.

Intumescent and smoke seals

Intumescent materials expand when exposed to heat and help protect gaps around the leaf and selected hardware preparations. Smoke seals reduce the movement of smoke during the early stages of a fire. The required seal type depends on the tested door assembly and local regulations.

How Do Single and Double Doors Differ?

Single doors usually require a simpler combination of hinges, latch and closer. Double doors are more complex because both leaves may need to close in a controlled sequence. Where one leaf carries an overlapping astragal, a coordinator ensures that the inactive leaf closes before the active leaf.

Exit doors may require certified panic hardware instead of conventional lever-operated locks. Rim devices can be used with a mullion, while vertical rod devices may support an unobstructed opening. Every arrangement must remain compatible with the fire rating.

Which Standards Matter?

EN 1634 evaluates the fire resistance of door and shutter assemblies, including relevant hardware configurations. EN 12209 covers mechanically operated locks and latches, while EN 1125 addresses panic exit devices operated by a horizontal bar. Other markets may specify UL, ANSI or BHMA requirements.

Certificates should identify the product model, classification and permitted application. Similar appearance does not prove that one item can replace another within a rated opening.

How Should Buyers Build a Hardware Schedule?

Begin with the door number, location, material, dimensions, fire rating and opening direction. Then record the lock function, handle, cylinder, hinges, closer, exit device, seals, finish and required certification. This creates a complete fire door hardware set that installers can identify and verify.
