Door thickness determines whether the cylinder, spindle, screws, trim and lock body can be assembled correctly. Ordering a suitable lock case without checking the complete door section can result in cylinders that protrude, spindles that fail to engage or fasteners that cannot reach their fixing points. Careful coordination of architectural door hardware begins with an accurate finished-door measurement.
Thickness should be measured after surface panels, decorative layers or protective facings are included. The nominal door specification may not represent the finished dimension at the lock position.
Buyers should record:
Total finished door thickness
Thickness of each face panel
Position of the lock case within the door
Inside and outside trim depth
Cylinder centerline position
Reinforcement plates within metal doors
Measurements should be taken at several points if the door construction is uneven.
Euro Cylinders are generally measured from the central fixing screw to each end. The inside and outside dimensions may be equal or different depending on the lock position and trim.
A cylinder that is too short may sit below the escutcheon and become difficult to operate. A cylinder that projects too far can weaken security by making it easier to grip or attack. Protective escutcheons should therefore be included when calculating the required cylinder length.
Lever spindles must pass through the follower far enough to engage both handles securely. Short spindles may slip out of position, while unnecessarily long ones can prevent the handles from sitting tightly against the door.
Through-bolts and fixing screws must also match the finished thickness. Cutting screws on site is possible for some products, but large projects benefit from receiving correctly sized components and clearly labeled hardware sets.
Door thickness affects how the lock case is centered within the leaf. Very narrow stiles, rebated doors and doors with internal reinforcement may limit the available installation space.
Locks for thick doors may require:
Extended cylinders or thumbturn spindles
Longer lever-handle spindles
Longer through-bolts and fixing screws
Custom strike or rebate components
Modified escutcheon arrangements
Special door preparation drawings
The lock body backset is measured from the door edge rather than across its thickness, but the available internal space still determines whether the case can be installed without interfering with glazing, reinforcement or decorative panels.

Metal doors often contain reinforcement boxes around the lock preparation. Wooden doors may have solid lippings that limit the mortise depth. Acoustic, security and fire-rated doors can include multiple layers that must not be cut outside the approved preparation.
