Panic Hardware allows occupants to open an emergency exit through one simple pushing action. Installed on the escape side of a door, its horizontal bar or touchpad retracts the latch without requiring a key, code or special operating knowledge. Commercial panic hardware is mainly used where large numbers of people may need to leave a building quickly during fire, power failure or another emergency.

The precise requirement depends on occupancy type, occupant load, door location and local building regulations. Not every outward-opening commercial door automatically requires a panic bar.
During an emergency, people may push against the door before consciously locating the release hardware. A horizontal operating section provides a large contact area that can be activated by the hand, arm or body.
Pressing the bar transfers movement through internal linkages and withdraws the latch. Once released, the door opens in the direction of escape. The latch returns after the pressure is removed so the door can secure itself again when closed.
This simple movement reduces reliance on fine motor control and makes the exit easier to operate under crowded conditions.
A rim device uses a surface-mounted latch that engages with a strike on the frame. It is commonly selected for single doors and double doors fitted with a removable or fixed mullion.
Mortise panic hardware operates a lock case installed inside the door edge. It can provide a clean appearance and coordinate with selected security functions.
Vertical rods latch at the top or at both the top and bottom of the opening. These models are often used on double doors where a central mullion is not desired.
The configuration must match the active leaf, inactive leaf, astragal, frame and required clear opening.
Standard panic hardware and fire exit hardware both provide immediate egress, but products installed on fire-rated doors require appropriate fire approval. Fire exit devices must allow the door to close and positively latch after use.
Mechanical dogging is generally unavailable on fire exit hardware because holding the latch permanently retracted would prevent the fire door from securing. Non-fire-rated openings may use approved dogging functions where building regulations permit them.
Before ordering emergency exit panic hardware, buyers should provide the door width, height, thickness, weight and material. The inquiry must also state whether the opening is single or double, fire-rated or non-rated, and equipped with an astragal or mullion.
Exterior access requirements should be identified early. Lever Trims, pull trims and cylinders can allow authorized entry while preserving free egress from inside. Finish, corrosion resistance, handing and compatible door closers also require coordination.
